Artist:
Snowday

Description:

Snowday uses music theory, including demonstrating the use of harmonic parts and vocal drumming, to trace the history of a cappella in an energizing performance that explores the extensive capabilities of the human voice and inspires creativity and musicality in students of all ages. They open their program, An A Cappella Musical History, with an upbeat and engaging song. They give a brief history of a cappella – going over each era of the genres listed using a 10 – 15 second snippet: Chant (single voice), Choir chant (e.g. Mozart Ave Verum snippet), Spiritual, Barbershop, Doo Wop, and Contemporary a cappella (full song).

Snowday describes the difference between high and low voice parts in a cappella. Using either top-down or bottom-up, the students are able to hear the different parts and how they fit together. Snowday builds the parts and leads into a full song. They also offer a short vocal percussion demonstration, followed by a call and response “try it” time with basic sounds. Using 4 – 5 bars of a song, Snowday will break it into 3 – 4 parts and then have the audience create their own song. This leads into a song with opportunities for the audience to sing along with the parts that they’ve learned.

The program is appropriate for K – 5, 6 – 8 and 9 -12, as well as various levels of musical ability. The length of the program is flexible and can be adjusted to the school’s needs.
