Master teaching artist Karen O. Brown's workshops strengthen curriculum and deepen learning for all ages. Karen creates excitement while exploring topics such as: butterfly life-cycle, rain forest, immigration, habitats, weather, transportation, vocabulary-building, plastic bag pollution, and any others you'd like to propose!

Creativity and learning: both spring to life in Karen O. Brown’s engaging workshops! Karen’s extensive international travels in Southeast Asia, Europe, Central and South America inform and enrich her imaginative approach to teaching and personal expression. Karen Brown’s education includes graduate studies in textiles, ceramics, sculpture, 3-D and surface design, bookmaking, and photography. Karen is an acclaimed professional artist with commissions at Children’s Hospital and the D.C. Commission for the Arts. Karen’s inspired and welcoming approach to teaching draws students in as they discover the joys of artistic exploration.
A Kennedy Center Master Teaching Artist, Brown also teaches through the Smithsonian and Washington Performing Arts Society and conducts professional development workshops for teachers, too.

A wide variety of book structures are taught based on curriculum topics of the school’s choice. Recycled materials are sometimes used in the structure!
Exquisite paper constructions reinforce math standards.
Explore emotions, feelings and discuss anti-bullying techniques while making exquisite self-portraits or “manners of the heart” quilts.
Learn the origins of unusual heritage arts projects as you create them! Fascinating projects include Chinese headdresses, Kenyan jewelry, Egyptian masks and more!
