Adjoa Burrowes is a prolific author and illustrator of children's books who specializes in teaching art to children in elementary and middle school. She uses the bright colors of her artwork and the inspiring messages of her stories to encourage tolerance, cultural pride, individuality, and creativity. She has contributed to the community through her books, which include Grandma's Purple Flowers and Everybody Wears Braids, as well as murals, exhibitions, and interactive art activities. In her programs, students are encouraged to tell their own stories through activities including collages, book making, and creative writing.
Adjoa majored in print-making, and spent several years working as a graphic designer and a consumer product designer for companies like Disney, Mattel Toys, and even the Barnum and Bailey circus. Of her own work and creative process, she says "I'm inspired by the beauty of the natural world. Each season holds endless intrigue for me - from the carnival of colors in fall to the detailed line work found on the wings of a butterfly...Creating in collage fascinates me because of the constructing and deconstructing elements. The process of taking pieces and reforming and redefining their position in relations to others motivates me."
